Death with Dignity Update, 2/20/2006

1998
In May 1998, the Oklahoma State Legislature pass the Assisted Suicide Prevention Act, requiring that health care professionals' licenses be suspended upon a felony conviction of assisted suicide. In November 1998, Senate Bill 1243 became law, prohibiting the dispensing of medication for the purpose of assisted in a death. Notably however, the law exempts physicians who give increased dosages of medication to relieve pain -- even if the treatment increases the risk of death.
