A Quick Note: Death and Taxes
posted by Peg Sandeen, MSW on December 28, 2011
I hope you'll strongly consider our efforts as 2011 wraps up and you're making your final decisions about which causes to support. When you give to the Death with Dignity National Center, you're getting much more than a tax deduction: you're affirming your support for these carefully-crafted laws and helping others learn how and why these laws work.
Your gift will help us be ready to support the grassroots groups in two states, Massachusetts and Vermont, which are currently working to enact new Death with Dignity laws in 2012. With your help to reach our goal of $100,000 this giving season, we'll be ready to support these groups with our decades of experience in this movement.
Even beyond all the activity in New England, here are a few more highlights of the exciting developments in the Death with Dignity movement this year:
- New polls found 70% of Americans believe people should have the right to decide when or whether to hasten their deaths when facing a terminal illness, and between 70%-77% of Washingtonians and Oregonians have a favorable opinion of their Death with Dignity Acts.
- Death with Dignity has become part of the mainstream discussion; most recently both Dr. Oz and Montel Williams spoke plainly and clearly about why these laws are necessary.
- How to Die in Oregon, a groundbreaking documentary about the Oregon and Washington Death with Dignity Acts wowed audiences at large and small film festivals worldwide and was warmly received when it aired on HBO during two month-long stretches. It's scheduled to be released on DVD on February 14, 2012.
Please help us continue this momentum into the new year! Your online tax-deductible contribution of $35, $50, $100, or $250 has the power to bring dignity home to those who are dying and their families. Your donation to our education work and grassroots support is deductible to the full extent allowed under the law.
