The Next Step in a Campaign

posted by Peg Sandeen, MSW on August 25, 2010

We are entering into a new phase of a Death with Dignity ballot initiative campaign!

The ballot initiative process has been time-tested in our movement, and is the surest way to achieve the successful passage of Death with Dignity laws. The process may take time, but the rewards are worth it. State by state, we will bring the right to die with dignity to the people of the U.S. Having you, our supporters, by our side each step of the way is what makes this possible.

Campaigns take time, perseverance, and commitment -- a long-term view. With any ballot initiative campaign, there are several phases leading up to the final public phase. Usually, the general public is only aware of the final phase. It’s during these early, quiet phases that much of the behind-the-scenes work is done to lay the foundation for the public phase. We are currently completing the first non-political phase of a campaign with the goal of launching into a full-blown public political campaign through our 501(c)(4), the Oregon Death with Dignity Political Action Fund, in January, 2012.

In the first phase we completed polling, and the data suggest that a shift in focus to New England has the potential for success. As a result, we’re now identifying regional stakeholders and supportive groups. This work is all part of the initial phase of a ballot initiative campaign when decisions are made and key local players are identified.

As we enter Phase 2 of our campaign to bring Death with Dignity to New England we’ll start coalition building and further engaging local players and stakeholders. We’ll begin to tell Oregon’s story to the people of New England in a more direct and tangible way, and we’ll educate constituents to initiate action from the ground up!

This next Death with Dignity ballot initiative campaign has huge implications for the Death with Dignity movement. It’s the step we need to take to secure Death with Dignity’s place as a legitimate policy in our culture. There are many tasks to be done before we can launch into a full-blown ballot initiative campaign. And with your support, we will be able to forge ahead!

this is a right anyone who is alive and wishes to be otherwise should have with no interference from religions, government, medical companys or anyone else. They worry about prisoners rights, terroist rights, illegal alian rights, but this should always have been everyones right from the beginning of time. Who has a right to interfere in a persons right to die, no one, and its a disgrace that this country has such cowardly leaders, that it appeases the phoneys who make money on extending death, and the fanatics who think know better than anyone else what happens when your dead, They know nothing, and should just stay out of it, it is none of anyones business but the dying person and their should be no prerequites. Just the person will and desire. Period butt out of others business, forcing your beliefs on us is very, very, very wrong and needs to be abolished now.

And the older you get, the closer you get to your eventual death,
And it can’t be avoided until you take your very last breath,
But don’t think about it and maybe it will just go away,
Unfortunately that’s not true either but you still can’t overstay.

Your dog can get euthanasia at the vet’s and no questions asked,
He can lie down and peacefully die and no one is aghast,
But you can’t have assisted suicide or your doctor goes to jail,
They take this so serious; they might not even give him bail.

You don’t read about this because it’s kept out of the press
Just like binding national referendums but did I digress?
You are not worthy of euthanasia but you don’t know
As far as they are concerned, you are just a no-body, John Doe.
