With awareness spreading about end-of-life care issues internationally, the Death with Dignity movement is experiencing and benefiting from:
Momentum is building in the movement.
The activity that we are witnessing signals to us that we are experiencing a positive political climate where change is possible and gains may be made to benfefit all.
End-of-life care is being discussed in thorough and complex ways by intuitions like the House of Lords, the Quebec College of Physicians, and the US court system. This means that international standards for care are being negotiated within and between nations. As a movement, this diffusion of ideas is important because more and more individuals are becoming aware of the death with dignity struggle and the need to address end-of-life care issues in a proactive, comprehensive, and compassionate way. Communities around the world are considering end-of-life care options and this increase in knowledge and discussion can spark additional changes here in the U.S. This is also important because it shows that there is a growing understanding of end-of-life care as a critical policy issue in the U.S. and abroad.
